Supreme Court pulls up Centre over black money, asks it to submit full list of names today The Supreme Court on Tuesday directed the government to submit to it the names of all foreign bank account holders by Wednesday, saying it need not provide a “protective umbrella” to such persons. The government's first list of black money account holders has named Pankaj Chimanlal Lodhya (L), Radha Timblo (C) and Pradip Burman. (PTI and ANI photos) Sternly rejecting the Centre’s argument that revealing the identity of legal account holders would amount to breach of privacy, a special bench headed by Chief Justice of India HL Dattu said, “Don’t give us your list... but the names given to you by France and Germany. If it breaches confidentiality, let it be.” The court also turned down the government’s request that it modify its order seeking the names of all such account holders. The Centre had contended that the names should be revealed only after investigations proved the accounts indeed hel

Black Money: List of 627 Foreign Account Holders Given to Supreme Court - NDTV

Black Money: List of 627 Foreign Account Holders Given to Supreme Court - NDTV NEW DELHI :   A list of 627 Indians who hold foreign bank accounts in countries like Switzerland has been given in a sealed envelope to the Supreme Court, which yesterday sharply rebuked the government for its handling of attempts to recover untaxed or black money stashed abroad.  "We can't leave the issue of bringing back black money to the government. It will never happen during our time," the judges said. Attorney General Mukul Rohatgi, the government's top lawyer, told NDTV yesterday that he believes the judges will not publicly disclose the names. The previous government headed by Dr Manmohan Singh and the new one have both argued in court that tax treaties with other countries prohibit the disclosure of names till charges are framed against the alleged offenders. Critics of that stand, including noted lawyer Ram Jethmalani, have dismissed that as a cop-out. It is on the basis of Mr Je

100 Women 2014: The taboo of menstruating in India

"I will never let my daughter suffer the way I do when I have my period. My family treats me like an untouchable. "I'm not allowed into the kitchen, I can't enter the temple, I can't sit with others." There's a sense of determination in 32-year-old Manju Baluni's voice. I met her in a remote village in Uttarakhand, a hilly state in the north of India. In India, there is generally a silence around the issue of women's health - especially around menstruation. A deep-rooted taboo feeds into the risible myth-making around menstruation: women are impure, filthy, sick and even cursed during their period. 'Tense and worried' People believe that menstruating women should not take baths and are anaemic. A recent study by a sanitary towel manufacturer found that 75% of women living in cities still buy their pads wrapped in a brown bag or newspaper because of the shame associated with menstruation.
